Many Porters were originally brown beers. The more black versions, which also tended to be stronger, were called Stout Porters. The term and style of Stout branched out from here. Not satisfied with a lighter beer, Porters once again slid darker, especially in the last century. This is where they diverged from Nut Brown Ales. This Brown Porter is much lighter than the Old Eight Porter, both in body and in color, while retaining a lot of the chocolate notes that people love. A lot of the smoke and roast is gone, allowing more mild carmel and cereal flavors to come out and balance this beer in a way that mimics both a porter and a brown ale. You won’t find one of these outside the UK.

Brewed with real oysters! That’s right, this rarely seen style of beer – a style that already pairs perfectly with oysters – is brewed with real oysters. Whole, fresh Calm Cove oysters were added to the boil, and fresh Washington oyster meat was added to the whirlpool along with the aroma hops.

Don’t worry, this beer is far from fishy. The oysters’ liquor and shells give this stout a briney, mineral-like quality that pairs perfectly with all of the roasted malt. You’ll find a whiff of ocean breeze on the nose, and a hint of salt in the finish.

Pair it with some fresh oysters, or drink it alone. Either way, we’re sure you’ll love it!

Can you believe it? It has been thirteen years already!

Our traditional Anniversary Ale is a Strong Irish Red Ale – strong enough to be called a Barley Wine in Ireland, in the US it might just miss this moniker because of its alcohol content – but not because it lacks any flavor! This strong, malt-forward brew smells of caramel apples, has a surprisingly light body, and has the flavor of freshly cut melon along with some toffee.

Brewed a day before Christmas utilizing the traditional German decoction method, this Dopplebock was fermented cold and slow over more than two months for a traditional bock you can usually only get in Germany. Of course, we added a twist by including a little rye and some American hop varietals. Round, very rich, and spicy with notes of honey, clover, cereal grain and a little grassy hop bite for balance. Sweet, but not as cloying as many bocks can be since we gave the yeast the time it needs to do its work.

Sadly, my Grandpa passed away nearly nine years ago, before he could experience the craft beer explosion in Minnesota, or try any of my brews at Barley John’s. I brewed this beer on what would have been his 100th birthday. Brewed from artesan, floor-malted, single strain Maris Otter and Golden Promise barley – only the best for grandpa! A perfectly balanced beer – not too hoppy, not too malty, not too strong, not too light, not too dark – just right!

This sour mash rye ale is based on one of the few classic American styles of beer: the Kentucky Common. We brew two days for each batch of beer. For the first day, we mashed in half of that day’s grain, brought it through all the rests, saccrification, and a single decoction. The mash was then chilled, and another 50 pounds of grain was mashed in to reintroduce the wild yeast on the grain. This mash was kept at 110 degrees for two days and allowed to sour in a process similar to what happens to yoghurt. The rest of the malt bill was then mashed in on brew day, and the brewing process went forward like usual. All the wild critters that soured the beer were killed in the boil, and the beer was fermented with our house strain. The second day’s brew was brewed like a regular batch, without the sour mashing. The resulting beer is sour, but just a little more than what you’d find in a Guinness. It is very light bodied, has a little brown in the color, and is carbonated very lightly to allow the texture – which is very rich and viscous from all the rye in the mash – to shine. This unique beer only yielded about half of the regular amount due to the loss from all the rye (which can be very sticky, and produces a lot of ‘flour,’ which sediments out of the beer after fermentation), so get it while you can!

A Tropical Stout is a subset of ‘Foreign Extra Stout.’ These beers were originally brewed to be shipped to the tropics, and then developed a character of their own once they began to be brewed in countries such as Sri Lanka, Brazil and Ethiopia. Big, smooth, and a little sweet – they have all the roasty taste of other Stouts, but are ‘de-bittered’ to remove some of the harsh, bitter tannins found in heavily roasted dark beers. Very light on the hops. Warm fermentation gives these beers a fruity quality you don’t often see in Stouts.

6.6% ABV | 28 IBU’s

The Dark Knight – The Dark Knight is our double fermented Old Eight Porter, aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels for 6-12 months. Double fermented refers to a second “feeding” of various sugars to increase the alcohol content as well as bolster the flavor. Chocolate, coffee, charcoal, and bourbon are the familiar notes for this beer. Served in a 5 oz pour, the bourbon note from this tap is very prominent as it is a first time use of the barrel.

The Dark Knight Returns – The same profile as the Dark Knight, however, since this is a second time we’ve used the barrels, the bourbon note is less prominent and as a result the beer is more rounded and balanced. The 2012 DKR was aged for an unbelievable 18 months before release!
